American Scholars Advantage

American Scholars Advantage
The American Scholars Advantage consists of a holistic approach to preparing students for standardized tests and Universities admission placement. We consider many aspects relevant to excellent test preparation. We focus exclusively on in-person, classroom based courses. Our comprehensive courses include the best instructors, a strategic, straight-forward approach, an adaptive curriculum, the most effective test strategy and content mastery available, and a comprehensive understanding of the psychology behind the test: everything you need to achieve your personal best test score. Together, all of these components interconnect to make for the most effective and comprehensive test prep education available nationwide. At American Scholars Academy, test preparation is easy to understand and as stress-free as possible. Our classroom based courses are the lowest priced of any classroom based national brand in the industry. With our courses, you can be assured that you are getting the best value for your money.
The American Scholars Academy Advantage consists of five distinct areas: the best instructors, a strategic, straight-forward approach, an adaptive curriculum, test strategy and content mastery, and a thorough understanding of the psychology behind the test. American Scholars Academy Advantage is all-encompassed by the human edge, our exclusive focus on classroom based courses that emphasize the human interaction that is so critical to student learning.
The Human Edge
We lead the test prep industry in the human approach. At American Scholars Academy , we focus exclusively on live, in-person, classroom based courses. In-person, classroom based courses are more effective than other course types because they provide direct human interaction. We believe that the unique social aspect of human interaction in a live classroom environment is critical to student learning. We focus our time, energy, and resources into classroom based learning because we believe it is the most effective learning model for test prep students. With the structure of an in-person course, instructors hold students accountable for completing their work and staying on task. An in-person course elicits greater dedication from students and encourages them to be fully committed to the task at hand. It enables students to get help in real time and provides easier access to their instructor. In a live, in-person, classroom based course students excel and see improved performance on their test. To achieve your best personal score, you need direct guidance, instruction, and interaction from a live, expert instructor in an in-person, classroom based course.
The Best Instructors
An American Scholars Academy Instructor makes the class. Our selection of highly qualified and knowledgeable instructors is unmatched in the industry. We hire high-level instructors who are articulate, intelligent, and experienced. All of our instructors have Top Test Scores, Teaching Experience, and a Graduate Degree (Master’s). They are test taking experts who will thoroughly prepare you for all aspects of the exam and provide comprehensive, guided instruction to help you achieve your personal best test score. Every American Scholars Academy instructor is expertly trained in our methods and curriculum. All of our outstanding instructors have prior university teaching experience. This gives them the ability to teach, not just the ability to get a good score. American Scholars Academy instructors work hard, are diligent, and put student needs first. They care about their students and are committed to their success. Our Instructors are the best qualified in the industry.
A Strategic Straight-Forward Approach
Our pragmatic approach is a clear, concise method that provides a logical structure to preparing for the exam. Our strategic, straight-forward approach reduces student stress and anxiety and helps students approach the test logically and strategically; test prep does not have to be any more difficult than needed. Our full length comprehensive courses are logically structured like university classes. They feature lecture, interactive learning in the classroom, and homework and practice tests that reinforce topics and strategies learned in class. We logically plan our students’ work both inside and outside the classroom to effectively maximize their time and effort. We make efficient use of time and have a structured course that includes concise materials which utilize real test questions. With American Scholars Academy you can trust that you’ll have the most pragmatic, concise course available for maximum score improvement. Our structure encourages the discipline and confidence needed for success.
An Adaptive Curriculum
American Scholars Academy courses adapt to students needs and are for all scoring levels. With our custom curriculum and personal attention, we ensure that everyone will have a test prep program that leads to success. Our adaptive curriculum is the best in the industry and is continually updated to reflect recent test changes. Our instructors have been trained and are equipped to expertly adapt the course curriculum to student needs, and at the same time, present the curriculum in an engaging manner that focuses on our easy to learn building blocks approach. Our curriculum covers every major section and subsection of the exam; all of our courses come with everything you need to thoroughly prepare for your exam. With our small class size, instructors can adapt the curriculum better so that students are learning at or above their performance level. With our adaptive curriculum, students learn what they need, at their own pace, and in the most effective way possible.
The Best Test Strategy and Content Mastery
We believe that a great test prep course should provide both test strategy and content mastery. We know how each test is designed and know the content required and strategies to use to help students reach their best possible test score. Our content lectures develop student skills and knowledge that leads to a confident approach to any test problem. American Scholars Academy Instructors teach exclusive techniques and specific test strategies for each question type and test subsection. We deconstruct the exam into simple and straightforward concepts which translates into increased understanding and manageable problems. Once students learn how to solve problems correctly, we work on timing and speed to help students complete problems more quickly and efficiently. Our highly organized and structured approach provides students with a toolkit of proven strategies and techniques, and combined with complete content mastery, ensures that students can approach every question on the exam with confidence.
The Psychology Behind the Test
We incorporate psychology into our classes and it is one of the core strengths of our course offerings. Our curriculum is an immersion approach that encompasses a holistic test prep experience. We have developed a curriculum that integrates the linkage between psychology and test performance. With our approach students are better able to relax, focus on the task at hand, and devote all of their mental energy into doing their personal best on the exam. Our psychology discussion motivates students to reach their full potential and allows them to come to the test center with a relaxed mindset, and thus perform better on their examination. When a student is “all in” to preparing for a test, he or she has the best possible chance for success. We make studying for test prep as stress-free as possible. Our goal is for you to perform at your potential on test day.
Our Exclusive Focus: In-Person, Classroom Based Courses
At American Scholars Academy, we focus exclusively on live, in-person, classroom based courses. If you learn best in an interactive classroom setting, with guided and expert instruction from a real, live instructor, then our test prep courses are for you. All of our company resources are committed to classroom based learning and we prepare students for only four standardized tests: the SAT, GRE, TOEFL, and IELTS exams. Students come to us because they know we focus exclusively on classroom based instruction: we devote all of our energy, time, and resources into creating the best classroom based courses available.
Many companies offer in-person, classroom based courses, but additionally offer many other services and products such as online, weekend, or video courses plus tutoring, private instruction. This dilutes their ability to provide an effective classroom based course. Think about it, companies that spread themselves too thin can’t be experts in everything. We have years of experiences and expertise in classroom based learning and our company mission is to be the nationwide leader in classroom based test preparation instruction.
We focus exclusively on live, classroom based courses because we believe there is no substitute for a real, live instructor. We believe that the unique social aspect of human interaction in a live classroom environment is critical to student learning. Classroom based learning has been around for centuries and has stood the test of time. Other forms of learning just do not measure up. We focus our time, energy, and resources into classroom based learning because we believe it is the most effective learning model for test prep students. We’re excited and focused about classroom based instruction.
Unlike most other test prep companies who are jumping on the technology bandwagon, we do not provide online, internet-video, or online game-based courses because we know they are not effective. Instructors are irreplaceable and nothing can ever take the place of instruction from an in-person, classroom based course. We do not do one-on-one tutoring, private instruction, or provide courses for any subject tests. We do not create publications or write test prep books for retail or online bookstores. We have dedicated all of our energy and resources into classroom based courses. This is our exclusive focus and this is why our test prep classes are so successful.
Live Human Interaction is Critical to Learning
In-person, classroom based courses are more effective than other course types because they provide direct human interaction. The unique aspect of test prep is the heightened anxiety and stress that many students experience. This heightened stress can be best alleviated and managed in a live, interactive classroom format; a format in which an expert instructor guides a class of students towards the same goal: your personal best score.
Our focus is classroom based learning, and we lead the test prep industry in the human approach. People will always need others around them, we are hard wired for it. Human interaction in a classroom based setting is critical to learning. Technology can be useful in some cases; however, nothing can ever replace learning from an expert instructor in a real, live classroom.
Advantages of an In-Person, Classroom Based Course
An in-person classroom based course provides many advantages over an online, live-online, video, or game-based course. Our in-person classroom courses allow students to get help in real time; a dynamic course affords easier access to the instructor. Our instructors can pick up on weaknesses and address questions as they occur, and they provide techniques and strategies to guide students in the right direction. Students can ask questions about challenging problems and receive immediate feedback. In a classroom environment, having other students with you is especially beneficial if you are too nervous to ask those same questions yourself. An in-person classroom based course provides in-person support and allows you to spend time on what really counts.
Students in classroom based courses are required to actively listen and take notes in class, and are more active, focused, and diligent in their studies. An in-person course elicits greater dedication from students and encourages students to be fully committed to the task at hand. We have found that when students study on their own or utilize an online based course, they are not as responsible and/or disciplined enough to take their practice tests, actively participate, or complete assignments. With the structure of in-person course, instructors hold students accountable for completing their work and staying on task; classroom based students excel and see improved performance on their test.
An in-person, classroom based course allows students to form a support network with their fellow classmates and build relationships within a cohort group. We have found students to be more motivated in an interactive learning environment with a group of other students than with an online or video course. American Scholars Academy courses facilitate productive interactions between students and help classmates foster positive relationships with each other and with their instructors. These interactions are critical to class dynamics and students become more engaged in the subject matter due to the classroom environment.
For many, test prep is too stressful and overwhelming to go through without a live, structured, classroom based course. To achieve your personal best test score, you need direct guidance, instruction and interaction from a live, expert instructor who has experience and knowledge — someone who has been through it before. Nothing is better than instruction from a real person, and test prep students learn best in a real classroom with an instructor. An in-person, classroom based course through American Scholars Academy is one of the best investments you can make for your educational goals.
The American Scholars Academy Advantage comes with an affordable course price. We are the nationwide value leader and want to ensure that every student has access to high-quality test prep courses and admissions. Our in-person, comprehensive, classroom based courses are all well priced – the best value out there and the lowest course cost of any national brand. Our courses come with everything you need to thoroughly prepare for the exam, so there is nothing more to buy. Our 6 week courses include 18 to 21 hours of in-person instruction, a live instructor, small interactive classroom support, 5 self-proctored full-length practice tests, and effective, expertly integrated course materials.
American Scholars: The Best Instructors
An American Scholars Academy Instructor makes the class. Our selection of highly qualified and experienced instructors is unmatched in the industry. We hire high-level instructors who are articulate, intelligent, and experienced. They are good people who sincerely care about their students. Our compassionate and dependable instructors are test prep experts who are committed to your success. We carefully select our instructors based on their tests scores, teaching experience, and graduate education.
The best qualified instructors in the industry require teaching excellence. All of our outstanding instructors have prior university teaching experience. This gives them the ability to teach, not just the ability to get a good score. Having prior teaching experience affords the skills needed to facilitate an effective class. Most other test prep companies do not require any teaching experience to become an instructor.
We believe having a live instructor accessible throughout the course is crucial to your success. We strongly believe that live classroom instruction is always better than taped, virtual, or online methods. Our classroom instructors teach the entire class, so there is consistency and teaching stability for our students. Having a stable instructor is important to class dynamics, continuity, and consistency. We have one instructor per course so students can get to know their instructor and form a productive relationship with them. Our instructors stand out from the competition.
Our instructors are the best qualified in the test preparation industry. We believe there are three pillars to an excellent test prep instructor: (1) Top Test Scores, (2) Teaching Experience, and (3) a Graduate Degree. Unlike other companies with too broad a focus (too many products or a lack of high quality products), we only offer classroom based courses: this allows us to carefully select our faculty. Our small staff means real quality control. We also pay our instructors well above the industry standard. A majority of our instructors are current graduate students. Over 1/4 of our faculty has Masters degrees
Top Test Scores:
All of our instructors have top test scores. A top test score means mastery of the test, not only
of the content, but of test strategy, pattern recognition, and time efficiency. All of our
instructors have top test scores and are very intelligent and gifted. We only hire instructors
who teach all areas of the test and have scored well on all sections.
Our instructors know how to teach. Every member of our staff has experience in the classroom and a proven track record of teaching success. We only hire instructors with previous teaching experience. Instructors with prior experience are of a higher caliber, competent at an advanced teaching level, and have the teaching experience to more readily convey challenging concepts. They have learned the interaction necessary to succeed with students, and are better at guiding students to their goals. Most companies do not require instructors to have prior teaching experience. We do, and we feel it is absolutely necessary because it allows them to effectively share their knowledge and test taking skills. you can trust American Scholars Academy for an excellent instructor for your test prep and admission needs.
All of our instructors have a graduate (Master’s) or professional degree (MBA)
or are current graduate/professional students. Over 1/4 of our faculty has a Masters degree. How does a graduate/professional degree relate to our courses or to teaching test prep? Having a graduate/professional degree is important for depth and breadth of analytical thinking and for the maturity in teaching and student interaction.
Going through years of graduate/professional education brings experience and knowledge in how to learn, effective teaching techniques, and it advances the caliber of the instructor. Most other companies do not require instructors to have a graduate/professional level of education; their instructors are generally inexperienced college students. We also find that our students look to their instructors as mentors who have been through it before, and they enjoy the opportunity to ask them questions about graduate/professional school and college in general. A graduate/professional education counts when it comes to test prep.
Our Instructors are Adaptive
Our Instructors are adaptive and flexible to the needs of their students. Their empathy and experience in understanding student levels allows them to present and adapt the curriculum to the learning styles and scoring levels of the class. A live classroom instructor is the best adaptive engine in the world. Computers and their adaptive algorithms may be able to adjust the curriculum, but instructors can do it better since they are in the classroom with the students and have firsthand knowledge of each student’s learning style, needs, and abilities. At the class level the instructor will take into account test scores, class participation, homework progress, and student needs, and then adapt the class to the scoring levels of the students. Instructors also adapt the curriculum to the individual student and can provide an individualized, optimal study plan for each student. We have small class sizes, generally no more than 15 students, so our instructors have a much easier time adapting to student scoring levels and needs. With an American Scholars Academy instructor you get focused, custom tailored instruction.
Our Instructors Want to Help you Succeed
Test prep takes a lot of work from both the instructor and the student. American Scholars Academy instructors work hard, are diligent, and put student needs first. They care about their students and are committed to their success! We focus on hiring instructors who are concerned mentors who motivate students and foster long term results. Not only do they help students set achievable goals, but they also direct a path towards attainment, while continuously monitoring their students’ progress and results. American Scholars Academy Instructors hold students accountable for their homework and practice tests. They facilitate peer relationships so students have a network to depend on. They’re encouraging but patient and can lend an ear to your test prep fears; in essence, they can be relied upon. Our instructors have been in your shoes before, and want to share their knowledge, skills, test prep expertise and know how with you. While they are high-caliber, they can still relate to their students, so students are comfortable to ask questions or ask for help.
Every American Scholars Academy instructor is thoroughly trained in our methods and curriculum. They are fully prepared and versed, and are experts in our course strategy, structure, and methodology. Unlike other companies all of our instructors are trained by top management; we emphasize quality control. Every instructor we hire comes to us with a solid foundation of skills necessary to be an effective instructor and we develop and cultivate those skills through our rigorous training program so that instructors provide the best test preparation instruction possible. Instructors are provided a foundation in the American Scholars Academy methodology with the most comprehensive materials and resources available. We then build instructor test preparation expertise through comprehensive, thorough training in all areas of each test. This results in instructors who have all the necessary training, materials, and resources to effectively and successfully teach our courses. We invest in our instructors and they in turn put a considerable amount of time in preparing for each class.
Reviews and Evaluations
Our instructors are consistently reviewed for their effectiveness and performance. We help instructors build a track record of success through continued and ongoing evaluation. We seek student input each session, review this feedback with the instructor and integrate this information and our evaluations to help instructors improve their teaching performance. With continued reviews and evaluations from students, staff, and management, instructors perform at their highest level, and students get the best results.
We Make Class Fun
Test Prep at times can be dull, tedious, and boring, but our instructors are not. American Scholars Academy have the charisma to facilitate peer relationships in the class, and they have the energy to make classes enjoyable, even exciting and fun! They are easy going, willing to help, and are responsive to your needs and do care about you. They try and make class engaging so you are excited to come each week, work hard, and improve your score. American Scholars Academy: Strategic Straight-Forward Approach
American Scholars Academy Advantage consists of a strategic, straight-forward approach to test prep. Our pragmatic approach is a clear, concise method which provides a logical structure to preparing for the exam. We focus students’ time and studies into areas that maximize efforts and promote effective use of resources; all of which culminates into an increased score.
Many students can become stressed, distracted, and overwhelmed by preparing on their own or preparing with other resources that include extraneous topics and information. Our practical approach reduces student stress and anxiety and helps students approach the tests logically and strategically — test prep does not have to be any more difficult than needed. Our full length 6 week courses come with concise materials, utilize official test questions, have effective class structure, and are held on the weekends for students’ convenience.
With our strategic, straight-forward approach, students will see significant improvements in their test taking ability and their test scores.
6 Week Comprehensive Class Format
We have a 6 week comprehensive format for each of our courses. This effective format makes for the best use of students’ time and provides the best schedule for students to learn in and succeed. It allows students time to absorb the material each week and provides them time to practice all that they have learned in each class. It is the best format for students looking to increase their score.
Our 6 week course format provides an optimal balance where information is broken down into manageable portions while classes adhere to a concise format for efficient time management. Our comprehensive course format allows students to easily absorb new material by studying a specific component of the test each week; every week is compartmentalized, much like looking at one piece of the puzzle at a time. Our instructor led classroom courses provide comprehensive content reviews and strategy on each topic and students generally spend about 6 hours on homework and a practice test each week. Students typically spend about 55 – 60 hours total, including class time, throughout the entire course prepping for their exam. Test prep learning is maximized and is most efficient when you learn a new topic each week and practice your newly learned knowledge and skills a little bit every day.
We strongly discourage students from taking weekend only “cram” courses or online video courses. These courses offer little in terms of preparation and primarily gloss over the strategies and methods to attack the exam. In our opinion they are no better that buying a retail book at a local bookstore or studying on your own. Students who are serious and committed to their test prep studies will invest in a classroom based course with a comprehensive, weekly, format.
Concise Course Materials
One of our competitive advantages is our effective use of course materials. We don’t inundate our students with a massive amount of useless course materials that might confuse and overwhelm them; we are selective about our course materials and only use what is necessary. We provide everything you need to increase your score and we understand that your time is limited. In other words, we get right to the point: American Scholars Academy prep and Admissions Consulting students spend time on what counts. We make effective use of time and have a structured course that includes straightforward, concise materials that utilize real test questions.
All course materials are included and distributed on the first day, so you’ll know exactly what is covered each week of class. We have a structured course that includes straightforward, concise materials, and we use real test questions. All of our courses come with everything you need to thoroughly prepare for the exam, so there is nothing more to buy. Each student receives a book of real test questions and a American Scholars Academy prep and Admissions Consulting coursebook included with the course fee. Some courses include additional materials as needed, such as Computer-based Tests for the GRE and IELTS, and vocabulary for the GRE, etc. A no-nonsense course format and straight forward study materials make for an effective use of student time.
Many companies have a “we’ll throw everything into a course including the kitchen sink” philosophy into their course description hoping students will buy their course. They include hyped technology that is not useful or helpful. They will include thousands of pages of daunting and unneeded materials just to state “they have thousands of pages.” They will add hours upon hours of online or video components to their courses which few students watch and if they do, won’t realize value from the video presentations. They might make you think that it is better or it will help you improve your score, but it won’t. Other test prep companies may lead you to believe that more materials means better test prep, but our approach is different.
We know that test prep is already stressful and overwhelming, so we have created a course that is simply effective. The best test prep course maximizes student performance by focusing only on what counts, what’s critical to students’ success, and what will improve student test scores. American Scholars Academy prep and admissions Consulting materials are concise and to the point; we don’t overload students with useless materials and resources that students will never use. With American Scholars Academy prep and admissions Consulting you can trust that you’ll have the most pragmatic, concise course available for maximum score improvement. With American Scholars Academy prep and admissions Consulting, you are preparing for the test in the most simple, yet effective way.
Official Test Questions and Real Practice Tests
We use official test questions and official, full-length practice tests in our course. Utilizing real questions makes the difference. Practicing on real tests is the best way to improve your score: Pseudo-tests constructed on the same principles of real tests are not accurate, and are at times, much more difficult than the real thing. We have students practice with official tests from the College Board, the Educational Testing Service, the Graduate Management Admission Council. When you practice with real test questions, you’ll know exactly what to expect on the actual exam. You’ll know how each question type is constructed, and how to approach each question with the appropriate strategy or technique. Practicing with real test questions during the course enables you to be confident when approaching the real exam on test day because you’ll know exactly what to expect; there will be no surprises.
During our course, we have students practice our plans of attack and ideas and techniques on hundreds of questions. Students are required to complete 6 to 8 hours of homework each week that consists of structured practice directly aligned with the lecture and a proctored test at home. Students take 5 “real” tests over the course to simulate the actual testing experience and to assess their improvement each week. These “real,” official tests allow students to practice what they have learned from class and through homework assignments each week. They also decrease students’ anxiety on test day, and allow students to enter the testing room with a soldier’s mentality. Homework items are drawn from real test questions. American Scholars Academy students utilize official test questions in all phases of the course.
Students proctor their own practice tests at home to maximize class instructional time. Some companies provide proctoring services as a part of the course cost. While this can be desirable as a prospective student, it really isn’t necessary or worth the extra cost. Proctored tests can significantly increase the cost of a program, and it is something that you can simply do on your own at home. As a value service we’re here to save you money, especially with something you can do yourself, for free. Our instructors teach students how to effectively proctor their tests at home in a consistent format that closely matches the real test environment.
Many competitors tout their use of pseudo-tests or tests constructed by themselves. They state that these test questions are similar to the real thing. The reality is that no test prep company can match the test makers’ research and development of official test questions. It takes the test makers millions of dollars and thousands of hours to construct test questions. It’s a very carefully controlled process and takes a considerable amount of time and resources. No one except the test makers can produce questions that are worth practicing upon. Test prep companies do not have the capability to spend millions of dollars on producing test questions. Pseudo-type tests constructed on the same principles of real teats are not accurate, and are at times, much more difficult than the real thing.
Picking up the consistent test design patterns of real, official tests is one of the most crucial aspects of effective test preparation. Pseudo questions operate differently. Their patterns do not match nor are they consistent with official test questions. It is counter productive to practice on fake questions or any question that is not from a previously released test. Some companies also write pseudo-questions that are actually more difficult, sometimes called “advanced,” compared to the real tests. They feel that practicing on more difficult questions will help because it makes real test questions feel so much easier. The problem is that these concepts, skills, and knowledge bases are never tested on the real exam and it wastes students’ time and efforts. These topics are tangential and cannot be transferred to real questions. In short, nothing is better or more worthwhile for students than practicing with official test questions and real practice tests from the test makers.
Effective Class Structure
Our full-length, comprehensive courses are logically structured like university classes. They feature lecture, interactive learning in the classroom, and homework that includes untimed practice questions and timed practice tests. We logically plan our students’ work both inside and outside the classroom to effectively maximize their time and effort. We know what works, and we provide guidance and leadership to guide you toward your goal of a good score. Our structure encourages the discipline and confidence needed for success.
Class is held weekly to space out the work and to allow students time to study the material and complete their homework assignments and practice tests. The structure of class includes lesson plans for each type of question and topic on the exam each week, and practice tests at home. Our live, classroom based course is flexible enough to allow for structured lessons plans but also leaves room to discuss topics that students are struggling with. Time is built into the course to address questions that students may have about their homework and practice tests. Students’ assigned homework is directly aligned with the lecture and includes self-proctored practice tests at home. Our comprehensive courses afford the structure of classroom instruction along with the adaptability to adjust the syllabus to student needs, and in addition they facilitate peer support.
With our effective course structure, students are able to get the most out of their time, both inside and outside of the classroom. American Scholars Academy courses provide an optimal study-plan for each student.
Classes are held for your Convenience
Test prep can be stressful. We believe that test prep should be held on times that are easily accessible and relatively stress-free for all. We conveniently hold our classes on week days, and weekends, because we’ve found weekends to be the least stressful time to attend a test prep course. Most students have many activities and time commitments that preclude attending classes on weeknights. It can often be tiresome after a long day of school and/or work to attend a weekday evening test prep course.
Weekends are usually free for most and are one of the best times to take a prep course outside of one’s weekly activities and stressors. Students can be better rested for weekend held classes, which translates to higher energy, better cognition, improved memory, and enhanced class performance.
We have one of the best instructor to student ratios in the industry. We have a maximum of 15* students in each class because we believe a small class size is important to student learning. Studies have shown that lower student to teacher ratios contribute to better retention and a more directed and closer interaction. Students benefit from a small class size because it increases interaction, fosters peer relationships, and instructors can get to know their students and deliver test prep to individual concerns and needs. Access to the instructor is facilitated by having a smaller class size and thus student learning is increased.
With a smaller class size, students have more personal attention from their instructor. Students can have a positive working relationship with their instructor; not be just a nameless face in a large lecture hall class. A small class size ensures that instructors can manage their students’ efforts better. Instructors have time to answer student questions and can more readily adapt the curriculum to students’ levels; students concisely learn what they need. Individual progress is monitored better because there are fewer students to account for and instructors don’t have to repeat themselves in a small class setting. In summary, a small class size allows instructors to be more flexible in their teaching.
Year-Round Convenient Class Schedules and Alignment to Test Dates
We have eight session start dates per year for our four preps. We offer test prep courses throughout the year leading up to every examination date for your convenience. The SAT offer rigid exam dates per year and we offer a course for every exam date. The TOEFL,IELTS and GRE offer flexible dates for their exams and we have 8 course start dates each year to accommodate different students needs and school admissions cycles. In general we have uniform start dates in January, March, April, June, July, August, October, and December for all of our tests.
We always offer our courses on consistently to help with scheduling and rest. We try to make our classes and locations have the same exact schedules throughout the year.We do this to ensure maximum access to both current and future college and graduate/professional school students.
Our year round start dates allow students to choose the start date that works best for their individual schedule. When you are planning in advance to take one of our classes you’ll know our set dates and times for each course as they do not change.
Practice and Hard Work
Effective test prep takes student participation and lots of practice and hard work. We have rigorous courses that are demanding and exact high score improvements. Diligent students who put in the time and effort to complete all of the homework and practice test assignments improve tremendously in the course, and perform to their maximum potential on test day. Your dedication to the course plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of test preparation. The real secret, though, which most companies won’t tell you, is hard work and practice.
Going to class in itself does not equal a good score. To be successful, students need to be pro-active, take detailed notes, ask questions, and dedicate themselves with their time and energy. You will need to complete your homework assignments, improve on your weaknesses, and may need to spend extra time on tougher areas of the test. We focus students’ time and energy into what works, both inside and outside of the classroom. If you come to class each week prepared and work hard, you will see significant improvements.
Taking real practice tests is the single best way to improve your test score. Instructors provide students the necessary tools and information to proctor their take-home tests effectively. In all of our courses, you are provided with official real tests to proctor at home. This allows students to mimic the real world test examination format each week and take all practice tests under real test-like conditions. Practice allows you to reinforce concepts learned in class, and try new strategies and methods for solving problems. It allows you to figure out the best way to tackle a test question and makes you a better test taker. As a committed student, and with practice and hard work — you will definitely improve.
American Scholars Advantage : Adaptive Curriculum
Students today have diverse educational backgrounds, varying abilities, unique learning styles, and different test prep needs. We recognize that courses must be adaptive in nature; not only at the curriculum level, but at the student level as well. American Scholars Academy courses adapt to students needs and are for all scoring levels. Instructors monitor and adjust the classes to the scoring level of the students. Our instructors have been trained and are equipped to expertly adapt the course curriculum to student needs, and at the same time, present the curriculum in an engaging manner that focuses on our easy-to-learn, building blocks approach. With our adaptive courses, students learn what they need, at their own pace, and in the most effective way possible. We know that each student is unique and will benefit the most from a tailored curriculum.
American Scholars Academy instructors are concerned about their students’ success and will work hard to develop an optimal, overall study plan for each and every student. Students thrive in our classroom based format; a class where instructors adapt the course, further enhanced by a small class size. We make sure that everyone, regardless of initial starting score, will have a curriculum that leads to success. We want each and every student to succeed.
The Human Mind: the Best Adaptive Engine in the World
Many test prep companies have begun touting “adaptive technology,” where a computer program or algorithm adapts the curriculum to the students’ scoring level. There are many flaws with this approach and no technology based solution is better than the human mind.
Companies who tout a computer program are focusing on the wrong technology. They use many buzz words, such as “pioneering technology,” “adaptive curriculum,” or “technology enabled assessment-based learning,” and utilize marketing hype and fad phrases to differentiate their company and products. The technology, unfortunately, doesn’t work nearly as well as hyped and functions no where near the capacity of the human mind. Students find that working with an instructor who has experience and who has been through it before is superior to sitting in front of a computer screen and having an algorithm dictate their studies.
While other companies are touting an adaptive curriculum by computers, they seem to forget one important thing: the human mind is the best adaptive engine in the world. We believe that real instructors, in a classroom, adapt best to students when compared to any other medium or fad technology. No technology can ever replace the real value of having a live instructor in the classroom.
Instructors have been working directly with students and adapting in an interactive classroom setting longer than machines have existed, and they can sense things that a computer program can not. Humans can instinctually detect and sense students’ subtle cues and signals, and realize firsthand interactions and knowledge of students’ strengths and weaknesses. They can react to student inputs, hone in on where students need the most help, and can teach according to student improvements and results from students’ practice tests. Technology is great, but it can’t make up for the human interaction of a classroom course nor an instructor’s perceptual ability to interpret all of the direct and indirect signals emitted from students.
The power, the abstract thinking, and the intuition of a live classroom instructor combined with the context that a live classroom environment provides makes for a remarkably more efficient and intuitive test prep experience compared to any computer based program. American Scholars Academy instructors know how to adapt the curriculum to your needs, and to your level. While technology is not necessary in the classroom, the human mind is. The human mind is the best adaptive engine in the world, period.

Instructors utilize initial starting scores, practice test scores, student content and strategy mastery progress, and student feedback to adapt the course. Instructors monitor and adjust the class to the scoring level of the students; they will hone in on where students need the most help. Instructors adapt the course based on group dynamics, such as interactions and class participation. They also adapt the classes to the learning styles of the students. We solicit advanced student feedback and input to create the most adaptable curriculum for all students.
Our small class sizes allow instructors to additionally adapt the course to individual student needs. Individual progress is assessed through homework completion, practice test results, participation, and mastery of concepts. Instructors pinpoint deficiencies and suggest and provide additional instruction and resources. They work through the areas that you need the most help with, and focus students’ activities and efforts on areas that are of the greatest concern. They take into consideration individual’s learning styles and academic level. General and Individual level adaptability ensures that instructors are providing a custom curriculum for your test prep needs and learning style. An American Scholars Academy course ensures that every student is getting the best test preparation possible.
Individual Game Plans for Students and Personal Attention
Each student will have a plan of attack to maximize their study efforts and time. Instructors create individualized, overall plans for each student, based on their weaknesses and strengths. This allows each student to maximize their study efforts, both inside and outside of the classroom. We have a game plan that is tailored to you, so you can focus your time and efforts on what is most important. This includes homework, practice tests, and extra assignments to focus students’ attention, clarify weak areas to focus on, and solidify strong areas so students can solve problems faster and more efficiently. Everyone, regardless of initial starting score, will have a program that leads to success.
Our small class size affords personal attention from the instructor as well as direct interaction with classmates. With our custom curriculum and personal attention, we ensure that everyone will have a test prep program that is uniquely tailored to their needs. Regardless of initial starting score you will have a program that leads to success.
Committed, personal attention from instructors is a American Scholars Academy hallmark. Student needs are placed first, and instructors facilitate positive relationships between students. You can feel comfortable to ask your instructor questions and feel validated by his or her personal touch. Students also have the opportunity for personal attention briefly before or after class, via question and answer periods during class, and through e-mail help. This personal attention allows students to fill in the gaps to their own knowledge and understanding, and tie in the pieces and loose ends so that everything comes together. Our personal attention ensures that no student is left behind or is too overwhelmed.
Individual game plans for students and personal attention ensure that every student has a test program that leads to success.
Updated Resources and Materials: Everything You Need
At American Scholars Academy, we strive for excellence, and that includes a constant updating of our products. We continually update our test preparation courses so that they are aligned with newly designed tests, changes and developments. We have our staff continually take the tests and report back to our research and development team. We utilize our knowledge from the test makers conferences and incorporate it into our curriculum. We update for the latest trends in test preparation and go to the test centers to obtain new information on procedural changes. We conduct significant research into new and improved ways of attacking tests through updated strategies, techniques, and content specific to each test. We update our curriculum based on newly released official tests. We do formal updates each year and periodic updates throughout the year as necessary. We also update our resources and materials though student feedback and evaluations.
Our class materials incorporate all of our updates and provide students with the most up to date prep available. Our student materials are continuously updated to reflect test changes, however minor they might be. The structure of our courses, which tests we use, the flow of our materials, and the included homework assignments reflect the most current design of each test. You can trust that all of our materials and students resources are the most current. Our instructor manuals and the material the instructors use to teach the classes are continually updated as well. When the test makers release an updated version of their study guide/textbook, we incorporate that into our curriculum.
All of our courses come with everything you need to thoroughly prepare for the exam. Your course fee includes all of your materials, so there is nothing more to buy; everything is included in the course. You don’t need to do additional studying before your first class, because our courses begin at the introductory level and progress into the most advanced areas of the test. You get everything you need for the course on the first day. You also get a course schedule and syllabus so you know exactly what is covered each week, and what homework is assigned for each class. Our streamlined materials provide an efficient test prep experience and maximize the use of your time. Our directed homework and take home exams reinforce our concepts taught in class. American Scholars Academy students spend time on what counts, and have the most updated resources and materials available to them to do their best on the exam.
We are All Original
American Scholars Academy is all original. We develop all of our materials and curriculum in-house and have our own research and development team. None of our management or development team members have ever worked for another test preparation company. This exacts a unique focus and interpretation to the test prep material.
We’re focused at a higher academic and educational level compared to other test prep companies. We have deep educational backgrounds and years of academic research experience. Most of us are Masters Graduates. No other test prep company can match our education level and experience. We focus and test our strategies in a controlled research environment and we develop our content reviews from the ground up. American Scholars Academy offers the most advanced and tested approach to test preparation available.
Small Class Sizes Allow Adaptability
To facilitate an enhanced learning environment we limit our courses to 15* students or less. Our small class size ensures that students spend more time with their instructors. With a small class size, instructors can adapt the curriculum better so that students are learning at or above their performance level. Instructors can see first hand how each student is performing and can therefore adapt the lesson plan accordingly. Small classes afford personal attention and a closer interaction with the instructor, as well as with classmates. Learning and instruction is facilitated with a smaller number of students; with a small class size each student has a better understanding of the material.
Instructors can adapt a smaller class to a greater degree of precision than one with an uncapped limit. Small classes allow students and instructors an easy and on-going dialogue in which students can ask questions as they arise and instructors can recognize student difficulties as they occur. Small classes afford more personal attention and put students and instructors on a first name basis. Students can get advice and feedback that is specifically tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. Instructors work through an interactive process of identifying weaknesses, and learn how to address them. This is because they get to know their students and they can adjust to individuals’ needs better. In our opinion, small classes offer students a personal touch that uncapped classes cannot, a touch that is extremely important to student progress and development.
Instructors Provide Extra Help
Instructors are available for outside class help as an added benefit to students. Our instructors are available to meet briefly with students before or after class. They also will provide brief make-ups should students miss a class. Students can e-mail their instructor with questions, and instructors provide e-mail help throughout the course. Time is built into each class for student questions, for difficult problems students bring into class, and for homework problems they can’t seem to solve.
American Scholars Advantage : Test Strategy and Content Mastery
Our comprehensive, classroom based test prep courses include test strategy and content mastery. Other companies may only provide test strategies and tricks, but at American Scholars Academy, we believe that a great test prep course should provide both test strategy and content mastery.
Class time is devoted to content mastery to get students up to speed on topics that they might have forgotten in their educational studies. Effective and useful test strategies are covered in detail to ensure that students are learning the most successful strategies, techniques, and methods available to increase their test score. Instructors illustrate the steps and strategies using real test questions, leading students to a more advanced level of study. Our comprehensive course ensures that you will be prepared for all sections and subsections of the exam.
American Scholars Academy strategy for test prep is simple, straight-forward, strategic and effective: students make the best use of their time so that they don’t waste time on things that don’t matter. It’s a clear, concise approach backed by the best methods and strategies available. Our building blocks approach to test prep breaks down each question into the simplest parts and we teach students how to solve the problems and create a foundation for solving similar types of problems. We know how each test is designed and know the content required and strategies to use to help students reach their best possible test score. Once students learn how to solve problems correctly, we work on timing and speed to help students complete problems more quickly and efficiently. With our test strategy and content mastery, students will be thoroughly prepared to approach test day with complete confidence.
Deconstructing the Exam – We Make it as Easy as Possible
Our building blocks approach to test preparation is the best in the industry. Our deconstruction of the exam into simple and straightforward concepts translates into increased understanding and manageable problems. The fundamentals of each problem type are taught in the course. Complicated problems are deconstructed into simple exercises and then reassembled and reintegrated into a coherent whole. We break down questions into simple and manageable parts, and teach students how to solve the problems and create a foundation for solving similar types of problems. We try and keep things as easy to understand and as simple as possible, and try to keep speed and execution quality up.
The best way to think about problems is by looking at them at their simplest level. We focus on the building blocks, progress quickly through each step and, by doing so, arrive at the answer knowing that each step was correctly calculated or thought of. When looking at the test at an in-depth level, it is easy to see the commonalities and patterns of question types. When complex problems are broken down into simple, manageable chunks, they become easily solvable and less overwhelming. Our knowledge-based approach teaches students to break down complicated problems into “types” and to understand the right ways (and wrong ways) to approach such question types. In addition, instructors show students how they can use common sense to solve many test problems. Our students learn to think like a test designer and pick up the ways they structure, write, and design test questions. American Scholars Academy students can then tackle any problem they encounter with ease and confidence. Learning a fundamental building blocks approach to solving test questions, aligned with repeated practice, results in impressive improvements in test scores.
We Teach you How to be a Good Test Taker
The key to being a good test taker is having the ability to recognize patterns. Good test takers don’t necessarily have the highest IQ; everyone can be a good test taker if they are dedicated and put in the time and effort. Becoming a good test taker is a skill that can be learned from a good instructor. A top test taker approaches a standardized test by looking for patterns and commonalities, breaking down complex problems, and being efficient with their time. Our instructors will teach you how to look at the test like a professional test taker and recognize these patterns.
Our instructors teach students how to identify patterns in common questions that will appear on the exam. You’ll be surprised how easily pattern recognition can be learned when someone teaches it to you properly. Our instructors show students how to break down the questions, step-by-step, into their parts, and solve each component part of the question to come to a logical answer. Complex problems, then, become less difficult and overwhelming when broken down into smaller, manageable steps. It’s not something that students will learn right away, but with the help and guidance from a knowledgeable instructor, and lots of practice, students will become better at picking up patterns and commonalities among different question types.
Instructors have students apply our building blocks method to hundreds of official test questions so that they have plenty of practice before their official test. Students will have a toolkit of methods and strategies available to use during the course and on test day. When students recognize the pattern to a question, they can search their toolkit for the appropriate method, strategy, or technique, and implement it to come to the right solution. This method allows students to go through questions systematically without being stumped and to navigate through any unexpected turn. Students exit our course with a wide variety of skill sets: the ability to see patterns, apply tools, and break down complex problems; these skills will allow students to tackle any question on the exam.
A test prep course is more than just strategy and techniques. Our courses include comprehensive content reviews designed to teach students the content required for each section of the test. Developed by our in-house research and development team, our courses provide students of all levels with an in-depth and carefully tailored approach that enables our students to achieve complete content mastery. Our highly organized and structured approach builds skills and strategies for every content area and question type.
Many other test prep companies provide just a box of tricks and strategies for solving test questions. Although that approach may work at times, in order to confidently approach all areas of the exam, students must also know the background behind certain questions. A superficial look at solving test questions is not going to work for the entire exam. Students need to achieve complete content mastery of all topics in order to tackle the test questions confidently and do well.
American Scholars Academy Instructors cover content reviews to ensure complete content mastery. In class, instructors provide a Mathematics Review, Statistics Review, Grammar Review, and Writing Review. Our content reviews are an in-depth treatment of specific topics where instructors teach and discuss while exploring their use within each question type. We start with an extensive review of the fundamentals, which students may or may not remember from school. We gradually build to an understanding of the most advanced concepts that are required to succeed in every portion of the exam. Based on a student’s skill and knowledge level, instructors will adapt the curriculum to ensure students are learning what they need to know, in a careful and thorough manner. Each week, students are asked to practice and integrate the topics we’ve covered in class by working through their class materials and taking practice exams. The fundamentals and background of test questions are reviewed throughout the course to provide students with complete content mastery. Our content lectures develop student skills and knowledge that lead to a confident approach to any test problem. We include the most advanced content which many other test prep companies ignore.
American Scholars Academy Instructors teach exclusive techniques and specific test strategies for each question type and test subsection. These are powerful, yet easy-to-understand techniques that are intuitive and make a big impact on test scores. Test prep does not need to be difficult if you think logically; our instructors will show you how to approach test questions strategically and with confidence.
Standardized exams are written in a specific format, and they all must be written with a standardized process that follows certain rules and guidelines. Test makers spend millions of dollars on research and development to construct these tests and to develop their test questions. For the tests to be standardized they must be written in predictable ways: this ensures that the tests have the highest validity (the test score actually means something) and reliability (the test provides a consistent measure). Since the test makers must follow predictable test writing patterns, we can capitalize on these patterns, and their inherent flaws, and exploit them to our advantage for a maximum score.
We use proprietary techniques which are robust and effective, developed in-house by our research and development team. These strategies help students quickly navigate through each test section and help narrow down answer choices when the going gets tough. Our proprietary strategies make it easier to solve test questions, increase execution speed, and raise student test scores. Our strategies and techniques are backed by extensive research and have been proven to provide maximum results. They are continuously researched and tested on current test questions and are updated to reflect any test changes, however subtle. American Scholars Academy instructors teach our proprietary techniques and specific test strategies for each test subsection and question type. This approach accounts for all types of test questions students will encounter on the exam. American Scholars Academy students use the most updated, effective, and researched test strategies in the industry.
We implement a problem centered, interactive approach in the classroom. American Scholars Academy students learn test strategy collaboratively with their instructor through the use of in-class problems. Our instructors work through problems step-by-step with students to illustrate core strategies and techniques. They use official test questions to demonstrate problem solving techniques, and have students practice our methods of attack on hundreds of real questions from actual exams; our practice problem sets build specific sub-skills. American Scholars Academy test strategies and methods give students the ability to see the commonalities and building blocks of each question, and to extract patterns amongst different question types to develop a plan of attack for solving those questions quickly and correctly on the first try. Instructors also teach general techniques to capitalize on the exam and illustrate common traps and how to avoid them. Our methods work because they increase and hone analytical test taking and critical reasoning skills. With practice and guided instruction, students exiting the course are able to quickly and effectively navigate their way through the entire test.
American Scholars Academy strategy can be broken down into three distinct areas. We first focus on general overall strategy; that is, strategies that are broad based and look at the macro level of the test. We then focus on specific question type strategies, such as those that apply to categorized, specifically developed questions. Lastly, we focus on techniques and step-by-step methods that you can use, much like a template for solving each type of problem.
Each question type consists of fundamental building blocks that are used to construct each question. These fundamental building blocks are common amongst all tests and all question types. American Scholars Academy courses offer students the core advantages of learning how to extract the building blocks and commonalities of each question type. We teach students these building blocks, how to recognize them and how to navigate them step by step. With this important knowledge, students can approach each question type through a test maker’s lens; this results in a greater number of correct answers and a higher score.
Many test takers benefit from accurate question type identification and categorization. Knowing the question type allows students to follow specific paths of attack and to know what data to extract and utilize. American Scholars Academy strategies teach you how to recognize what type of question is being asked and, from there, determine what type of answer to provide. In addition, if you know the scope of the question, then you know what answers to eliminate based on non-congruency to the type of question or main idea.
Another useful test strategy students learn in our courses is process of elimination. Process of elimination is based on our perceptual system picking up and recognizing negative information more easily than positive information. Picking out and looking for anything that could make an answer wrong, in many situations, is much more beneficial in terms of time and accuracy than accounting for positive components of each answer that make it correct. In many cases, focusing on negative information is easier, and it saves time to pick out flaws.
Some tests are based on a level of difficulty principle with questions of varying levels of difficulty used to differentiate students. Other tests use the total number of questions to differentiate students, specifically tests where most students cannot answer all the questions in a specific time period. Regardless of format, assessing question difficulty plays an important role in student test scores. Many answer choices can be eliminated based on the difficulty of the problem. First we teach students how to differentiate test questions based on difficulty. Then we teach students to pinpoint answers to eliminate based on non-congruency to the question-type difficulty level (e.g., eliminate easy type answers for a difficult type of question). The ability to recognize question difficulty level is a valuable piece of information to test success.
Tests with writing sections require specific strategies to write to how each test is scored. Our research and development team has studied each writing section and has deciphered the framework and specific guidelines for each type of writing question. Writing sections are based on a structured template format where test graders (or computer algorithms for some tests) are looking for specific structures, ideas, and relationships. Many students initially have difficulty with the ambiguity of the task, including the scope and boundary conditions of their argument, and then have difficulty understanding that standardized test writing is writing to a specific template, not academic writing as taught in school. We deconstruct the writing section in class, teach students how to write to the test, and maximize students’ scores based on how the writing section is scored. American Scholars Academy students are taught how to write to each specific writing prompt. This leads to cogent, articulate arguments with maximum scoring impact.
While there are general rubrics or plans of attack for each question type, there can be multiple angles of attack when looking at common template questions found on the test. Each question can have more than one effective angle when simplifying and solving it. Our students learn general plans of attack but also how to look at problems from the most effective angle. American Scholars Academy instructors delineate each angle of attack for common exemplar questions and lead students through in-class problems to illustrate multiple angles of attack. Students then develop and interpret the test to their own specific way of looking at the questions; it’s all about getting to your own personal interpretation of the test. With practice, students learn to quickly execute angles of attack, without flaw, for each type of question on the exam.
The end result is to ultimately have a set of strategies readily available to use to attack each type of question encountered on the exam. As you get through each section of our course, you’ll accumulate a list of effective strategies to use for every subsection and question type. It’s very much like having a set of keys on a keychain and flipping through those quickly to apply the correct key, or “strategy” to the specific question at hand. You’ll be able to go through your list of memorized ideas one-by-one, applying them to specific questions. So when you approach a question you’ll just roll through your keychain of ideas, strategies, and techniques until you narrow the question down and get to the correct answer. At the end of the course, you’ll have a “cheat” sheet for each type of question on the exam.
Time is the Enemy
The efficient use of time is important to peak test performance. While the fundamentals of content and strategy are required, time utilization is of the utmost importance for top scores. We teach time management, time saving efficiency ideas, and quick problem execution throughout our courses. First, we expand students’ view of the test by introducing new concepts and content which they integrate into long term memory. As students form new connections within the material they begin to look at the fundamentals of the test at their own interpretation level. Then, through instructor guidance and our proprietary curriculum, students begin to interpret the test at the lowest common denominator fostering ideas and thought at a basic level, following quick, easy steps with maximum speed and flawless execution. Complex interpretation of the test may sound important, but breaking it down into quick manageable chunks is the key to maximum operating capacity and performance. Ultimately you will interpret the material in your own way after the class is over and will execute this information at your own understanding level; it will become consistent and foolproof. You’ll know how long problems will take, which steps to take, and where the traps are — instinctively. After an American Scholars Academy class, students are operating at maximum capability.
First we focus on teaching students how to break down problems into solvable chunks. Then we have students practice our techniques on hundreds of official test questions. Finally, we bring time into the equation and work on solving problems in the shortest amount of time. Solving problems correctly and quickly will result in increased test scores. If time wasn’t an issue, students could spend countless minutes figuring out how to solve a problem and working on it until they got it right; however, timing is critical to your test and it plays a big role in how you perform on your exam. American Scholars Academy students will focus on timing issues throughout the course, especially during the timed practice tests that they will take during the course.
American Scholars Advantage : Psychology Behind The Test
Overview / We Pioneered this Approach
Students preparing for a standardized test face a tremendous amount of stress and anxiety. Along with general anxiety of performing well on the test, they are anxious about how to prepare as well. We incorporate psychology into our classes and it is one of the core strengths of our course offerings. We have developed a curriculum that integrates the linkage between psychology and test performance. American Scholars Academy pioneered this original approach, helping students channel their stress in an effective way, and it is a unique aspect to all of our courses.
We are one of the only test prep companies that includes this unique aspect, and we provide students with the necessary skills to manage and navigate the psychological aspects of test preparation and performing to your potential on test day.
Our curriculum is an immersion approach that encompasses a holistic test prep experience. Strategy and content are important to test preparation as well as is class structure, but psychology is also an integral part of test preparation. Other companies may gloss over the psychological aspects of the test taking process, but we firmly believe that our psychology component provides students an additional advantage to an already well established and comprehensive curriculum. This core advantage helps students to focus, master their anxiety, and perform at their peak on test day.
Your mental mindset plays an important role in how you perform in the course and on your official test. We want students to enter our test prep courses with a positive mindset, a clean mental slate, and a “can do” attitude. Students’ beliefs in their abilities, and more importantly in themselves, is essential to realizing their potential. Many students come to our courses for our integration of psychology. They also desire the human interaction that a live classroom course provides. In a live classroom course students feel motivated to achieve a common goal: their personal best test score.
At American Scholars Academy we believe in the human element. With our approach, students are better able to relax, focus on the task at hand, and devote all of their mental energy into doing their personal best on the exam. We give students the tools necessary to excel.
Performing to Your Potential
Our goal is for you to perform to your potential on test day. Many factors lead up to your exam day and we navigate the psychology within the course and give you skills and confidence to reach your potential and peak upon test day. From our foundations of psychology lecture to our “game day” psych talk — we’ll help you maximize your score.
Our psychology discussion motivates students to reach their full potential and allows them to come to the test center with a relaxed mindset, and thus perform better on their examination. Our approach begins with understanding the psychology behind the test, not only of students’ own mental mindsets, but what variables are working for and against them within the test itself and within each subsection. Motivation and cognitive psychology are introduced into the classes to help students keep a positive approach and perspective throughout the test. This gives our students a mental edge when they take their official exam.
When you enter the program we assess your skills and determine your starting point. Then based on your progress we implement a plan to guide you on your path to peak performance. We are not defined by our limitations, but by our potential. An American Scholars Academy course will motivate you to reach your full potential.
Anxiety and Stress
Preparing for a standardized test can be one of the most stressful experiences of the admissions cycle and of your academic life. The anxiety and pressure, for some, can be overwhelming. Pressure can come from many angles: peers, siblings, parents, your own goals, professors, and counselors, all which can translate into added strain into an already stressful situation. Unfortunately anxiety and stress can lead to fear and crippled test performance.
We discuss stress in all of our classes: how to manage it, what to expect, and what is considered moderate stress that leads to optimal performance. External and internal causes of stress are discussed in addition to how to address test anxiety. Every student’s stress level is relative to their own internal stressors and relative to external reference points; other students might cope with the same situation differently. We focus on a study plan that results in a moderate level of stress or the “sweet spot” that leads to peak, optimal test prep performance.
We make studying for test prep as stress-free as possible. Many students who enter our classes are anxious, scared, and even fearful of their test performance. These students count on our ability to help them through these heightened emotions and states. We reduce stress by clearing a path to the goal of your own personal best test score.
Instructors help students reduce stress and anxiety levels by adequately preparing them for all sections and subsections of the exams. Every aspect of the test will be covered so that there will be no surprises when it comes to test day. This results in optimal levels of stress needed to do well on the test. Taking practice tests helps further reduce stress by desensitizing the test taking experience, as well as making students familiar with the test format, content, and time constraints. Students come into the test center with confidence knowing that they have prepared as best as they could, and are ready to take the test with a clear and focused mental mindset.
We Keep Motivation High and Help Students Avoid Pitfalls
We believe that a prep class not only has to teach, but motivate because students’ effort is a part of the prep process. Your effort and mindset are a big part of test prep success. We discuss psychology to help guide you through the prep process and avoid the pitfalls that you might encounter.
Our courses introduce a number of motivational theories relevant to test prep. Student motivation can be influenced by any number of subversive external factors. Motivation can also be affected by internal factors and faulty comparisons which can lead to performance deficits and pitfalls. Pitfalls can occur when students meander off the test prep path and are subverted or blocked in their path to success. Our approach combats these pitfalls and results in the motivation and drive to improve on tests and to avoid these potential hazards.
Our focus on motivational theory helps students set appropriate goals which match their aptitude, resources and drive. By initially discussing motivation and helping students keep high motivation on their path to success, we continually help students work around and solve potential problems which could decrease overall motivation towards the goal.
Throughout our course, students may become frazzled or disappointed when they are unable to solve a test question correctly. Our instructors are trained to motivate students to try other methods of solving problems, and to help students look at the problem in a new light until they find a solution. Instructors motivate students to keep practicing until they see results and master the material. Each student has the capability to perform at a certain level and instructors will guide students to reach that level. Motivation needs to be high throughout the course so that students are working hard and performing at their optimal level.
All of our courses provide live instructors in the classroom. This gives our students a significant edge over many other test prep students. Online courses, weekend only courses, video courses, etc., don’t afford this touch. Those students are at a disadvantage because they don’t get to work with an instructor in-person or over a full-length course.
Many students take a test prep course because they find it difficult to prepare on their own. Having a live instructor in the classroom provides support to students who feel overwhelmed or bogged down. Student tensions and stressors are best managed with an instructor who has been through it all before, who knows the ins-and-outs of the exam and who understands the stress and anxiety that comes with it. Our courses provide the Human Edge with real interaction from caring instructors who dispel stress and motivate students to succeed.
When left to their own devices, some students who prepare on their own do not have the best study approach and end up shortchanging themselves. Having a live instructor and classroom support helps these students successfully navigate their way through the exam. Our test prep classes make the best use of students’ time and they provide structure and a study plan that has worked successfully for tons of students.
Taking a live course holds students accountable for coming to class, completing their homework assignments, and taking practice tests. Instructors in the classroom motivate students to complete their work and give their best effort. They also direct students and clear potential test prep obstacles that may hinder student test performance. Our instructors provide lesson plans and assignments that address and improve on students’ weaknesses resulting in an increase in test scores. We have found that students have a clearer focus and perform better when in an interactive classroom environment. We believe a live instructor led course is clearly superior to an online, weekend-only, or video course.
Our courses are offered as an immersion experience. We want students to immerse themselves into our six week courses and commit all of their mental energy to test prep. In academics, 6 weeks is not a long period of time and test scores can easily be worth much more than that, in relation to time spent in school and grades. We want students to commit 100% to their test prep course, just like they are on an important academic mission at a significant moment in their life. Students who commit 100% to their test prep course and take the course seriously will do their absolute best. When a student is “all in” when preparing for a test, he or she has the best possible chance for success. The drive, the desire, guts, independence, heart, tenacity, the ability to survive, thrive, and succeed upon adverse conditions is the hallmark of the human spirit. Throughout the course, students should be committed, dedicated, focused, and completely immersed to the task at hand.
